Mexico City, Mexico 2011

I’m really enjoying spending time with my family but photographing them has proven to be a challenge. Everyone back home is used to me constantly snapping away so this hyper awareness of my camera is a foreign concept. I’m not sure how successful I will be at taking the family portraits that I had in mind but I have Martin Parr in the back of my head saying “You have to overcome the feeling that it isn’t the right time to take a photograph if you want to get away from this version of the perfect, harmonious family. I would argue that the more valuable document is the honest one.”

Mexico City, Mexico 2005

Tonight I’m flying to Mexico City. I shot the above image of my grandmother during my last visit in 2005 while taking a color film class. This particular photograph has stuck with me through the years and has inspired me to move to Mexico later this year. My trip will be the perfect excuse to immerse myself in the whirlwind of culture that characterizes el DF but most importantly, I’ll be able to spend some quality time with my family.
